WAVERLY – Wartburg College overcame a 13-11 shots disadvantage to gain a key Iowa Conference men’s soccer win over Loras College of Dubuque Oct. 8. A goal from junior forward Furo Tufa (St. Paul, Minn.), in the waning moments of the first half lifted Coach Kirk Artist’s team to a 1-0 win.

Tufa, delivering his first goal of the season, hit a strong strike at Duhawk goalkeeper Dan Wickman which was turned away in the 42nd minute. However, the ball rebounded, and Tufa took another attempt at the upper right corner of Loras’ goal and found the back of the net.

Loras (7-5, 2-1 IIAC) tried to even the contest throughout the second half, but a strong defensive effort for the Knights (7-4, 4-0) kept the home fans happy. Senior goalkeeper Brandon Busbee (Hiawatha) saved four Duhawk shot on goal tries to gain his fourth shutout of the season and drop his goals-against average to 0.82.

In the women’s contest, another battle of conference unbeatens went the way of the visitors. No. 8-ranked Loras scored a pair of goals in the opening 12:37 en route to a 3-1 win.

Coach Sara Johnson’s squad, dropping to 7-4-1 overall and 3-1 in the league, halved the deficit in the second frame. Junior forward Chelsea Frye (Waverly)hit a rope at the Duhawks’ goal that bounced off the near post and slipped past goalkeeper Katie Chambers to make it 2-1 in the 56th minute.

Wartburg had chances to even it up after but the visitors regained the two-goal edge with a score in the 85th minute. The Orange and Black produced 10 shot attempts with junior midfielder Katy Wendt (Bettendorf)topping the category with three.

The Knights return to conference play Wednesday, Oct. 13, when the Central College Dutch from Pella visit the Wartburg Soccer Complex. Match times are 5 p.m. for the women and 7 p.m. for the men.
