Weekly soccer notes - Sept. 16

Women and men vs. Macalester (Minn.), Saturday, Sept. 18 – 1/3 p.m. – Wartburg campus field; Women at Grinnell, Sunday, Sept. 19 – 2 p.m. – Springer Field – Grinnell College campus

Knights notes – Wartburg’s men face their fourth Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent in five dates, while the women’s squad does Saturday for the second time. Results have been positive for head men’s coach Kirk Artist and head women’s coach Sara Johnson. The men stand 2-1 over the first three matches, while the women are 1-0.Women’s news - Junior midfielder Katy Wendt of Bettendorf, en route to Iowa Conference women’s soccer Player of the Week honors Sept. 14, produced her first career hat trick in a 7-1 win over UW-Whitewater last Sunday. The victory closed a successful home weekend for the Orange and Black, as they out-scored the opposition 10-2. … The results helped give the Knights a ranking vote on D3Soccer.com’s top 25 poll. They are No. 6 on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s North Region listing. … Wendt’s weekend helped her to the team lead in several offensive categories including goals (five), points (11) and shots (12) through four matches. She’s also first with two game-winning scores. Her goal and point totals rank among the top 40 of the first NCAA Division III statistics report. … Sophomore forward Kaylee Benning of Waverly is second for the Knights in goals (two), points (five) and shots (eight). She also has the other game-winning score. The only other Wartburg player with three-or-more points is junior forward Chelsea Frye of Waverly. … Defensively, Johnson’s squad has surrendered four goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Monica Noti of Carol Stream, Ill., has a shutout as one of her four appearances. … Men’s news - A pair of tough 1-0 losses to regional standouts Augsburg and UW-Whitewater was the final result for the Knights’ home-opening weekend. Wartburg’s defense turned in back-to-back sterling efforts allowing only 10 shots both days, while senior goalkeeper Brandon Busbee of Hiawatha recorded a combined six saves. … Busbee’s 0.75 goals-against average ranks amidst the top 100 of the first NCAA Division III statistics report. … The trio of senior midfielder Luke Prater of Springfield, Mo., sophomore midfielder Neil Shields of Adel and senior forward Jon Farrell of Washington, Mo., is responsible for the three goals. The Orange and Black, despite just three goals through four matches, have out-shot the opposition 52-37. … Wartburg managed seven ranking votes on the current D3Soccer.com top 25. Artist’s group is No. 8 on the NSCAA’s North Region roll call.
