Late rally fells Wartburg

WAVERLY – Sophomore forward Brandon Cook (Bondurant) and senior midfielder Lucas Prater (Springfield, Mo.), each had six shot attempts as part of a 26-14 Wartburg College advantage, but visiting Concordia rallied for a 3-2 regional win Sept. 26.

Coach Kirk Artist’s team, dropping to 4-4, used a comeback of its own after the Cobbers (6-3) scored just over four minutes after halftime for a 1-0 lead. Junior midfielder David Holte (Coralville) converted a penalty kick after Concordia fouled in the box to tie it, and the defender combo of senior Kyle McKenna (Davenport)and sophomore Kris Krohn (Cedar Rapids) produced the second goal in the 69th minute.

Concordia answered with less than five minutes remaining. Freshman forward Matt Glogoza took a pass from senior midfielder Alex Dahl down the left side and hit one just past the reach of Knights’ senior goalkeeper Brandon Busbee (Hiawatha). The two sides played a scoreless first overtime before the visitors ended it in the 116th minute when senior midfielder Philip Bruckbauer took a rebound from a great save by Busbee and nudged it in the net.

Notes – Busbee ended up with six saves, his second-highest single match total. … Artist’s team continues Iowa Conference action with a 7 p.m. start at Luther’s soccer fields in Decorah Saturday, Oct. 2. The fields are located due north of the Regents Center on their campus. … A live video and audio stream will be available via www.go-knights.net, the Internet home of Wartburg athletics.
