Baseball Sweeps St. Olaf

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.—The Wartburg baseball team (6-6 overall) swept non-conference opponent, St. Olaf (0-6) in a doubleheader that spanned Tuesday night through early Wednesday morning at the HHH Metrodome.

The Knights won the first game 9-2 and claimed the second 2-1.

In the first game, the Orange and Black took a two-run lead in the first inning as Ryan Powers (Wheatland) drove in Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) and the next batter, Drew Yoder (Wellman) brought in Chase Hirschauer (West Des Moines) with his RBI double.

The Oles would cut the lead to one as they scored in the second and evened the score at 2-2 in the third.

Wartburg began to pull away as it tallied three runs in the bottom of the frame and additional three runs in the fourth.

Yoder tallied his second double of the game in the sixth as Powers advanced to third and then scored on a St. Olaf fielding error.

Powers and Yoder each went 2-4 with 2 RBIs.

Scott Benson (Reinbeck) picked up his second win of the young season on the mound as he went 6.0 innings and struck out six.

The second game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when the Knights tallied three runs on three hits. Wilson drove in two on his RBI single and the next batter, Hirschauer drove in another run.

The Orange and Black scored their final run in the next frame as Andrew Krehbiel (Donnellson) drove in Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) from first on his double.

St. Olaf tallied its lone run in the bottom of the fourth.

Wilson and Krehbiel both went 2-3 at the dish.

Marcus Walczyk (Des Moines) earned his second win of the year and Ryan Doty (Dubuque) picked up his first save of the season.

Wartburg returns to action Sunday when it travels to the Metrodome again and will face Gustavus Adolphus in a doubleheader at 5 p.m.
