Baseball Splits with Gustavus

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.—The Wartburg baseball team (7-7 overall) split its doubleheader Sunday with non-conference opponent, Gustavus (2-4), at the HHH Metrodome.

The Gusties took the first game 3-2, but the Knights won the final meeting, 6-1.

The Orange and Black took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Levi Montague (Norway) drove in Tony Stenberg (Atkins) on his RBI double.

Gustavus took the 2-1 lead in the top of the next frame until Wartburg knotted the score in the bottom of the stanza as Chase Hirschauer (West Des Moines) drove in Ryan Doty (Dubuque).

The Gusties tallied one run in the seventh and the Knights were unable to answer in their last at-bats to give the Gusties the win.

Craig Kerper (Dyersville) and Doty each went 2-4 at the plate for the Orange and Black. Scott Benson (Reinbeck) went the distance on the mound and fanned four in the outing.

In the second game, Gustavus took the early 1-0 lead in the second, but the Knights used a six-run sixth inning to take the lead for good.

Ryan Powers (Wheatland) led the team at the dish as he went 2-3. Doty pitched his second complete game of the year and struck out ten.

The Orange and Black return to the field Friday when they open Iowa Conference play at Central on Friday at 3 p.m.
