Baseball Falls to Central
PELLA, Iowa—The Wartburg College baseball team (7-9 overall, 0-2 IIAC) opened the Iowa Conference portion of its schedule Saturday and fell 9-6 and 13-3 to conference opponent, Central (11-3, 2-0) Saturday.
In the first game, Central tallied three runs in the first before the Knights cut the lead to one with two runs in their second inning.
The Dutch scored one in their second to take the 4-2 lead.
The Orange and Black regained the lead in the third as sophomore Tony Stenberg (Atkins) slugged a two-run homer. Wartburg added one run in the fifth and one in the seventh to pull ahead 6-4.
Central compiled a five-run seventh inning to take the first game on a three-run walk-off homerun.
Stenberg led the Knights at the plate as he went 3-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Ryan Powers (Wheatland) and junior Andrew Krehbiel (Donnellson) each finished 2-3 at the plate.
In the final game of the twinbill, the Orange and Black jumped on the scoreboard first as Powers hit a two-run single to take the early lead.
In the third, sophomore Craig Kerper (Dyersville) drove in junior Levi Montague (Norway) to make the score 3-0 in Wartburg’s favor.
The Dutch tallied nine runs in their second inning to regain the lead for good.
Sophomore Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) led the Knights at the plate as he went 2-3 while Powers and freshman Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) each went 2-4.
Both teams return to the field Sunday for the nine-inning game in the series which is slated for 1 p.m.
