DUBUQUE, Iowa—Wartburg College’s head baseball coach, Joel Holst, won his 600
th career victory and 500
th for his time at the helm of Wartburg’s program Saturday as the Knights took both games of the doubleheader against Dubuque.
Holst moves up three spots to No. 18 on the NCAA Division III list of winningest head coaches (by victories).
The Orange and Black won the first game 4-2 and claimed the second game 4-1.
The first game was scoreless until the third inning when junior Ryan Doty (Dubuque) scored for Wartburg on sophomore Chase Hirschauer’s (West Des Moines) fielder’s choice.
The Knights tallied a run in the fifth, sixth and seven innings.
The Spartans were only able to score two runs in the fifth as Doty picked up his second win and third complete game of the season.
Junior Andrew Krehbiel (Donellson) went a perfect 3-3 at the plate.
In the final game of the series, the Orange and Black jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first on four doubles.
Wartburg scored its final run in the top of the seventh and Dubuque got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame with its one run.
Sophomore Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) picked up his first win on the mound this year and his first complete game.
Krehbiel again led the squad at the plate (2-3) and sophomore Ryan Powers (Wheatland) finished 2-4.
The Knights return to the field Tuesday when they host Coe in a Iowa Conference doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Hertel Field.
