CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa—The Wartburg College baseball team (14-12 overall, 7-5 IIAC) defeated Iowa Conference opponent, Coe, 9-5 in the nine-inning game of the conference series.
The Kohawks took the early 3-0 lead in the first inning as they scored on three hits.
The Knights got on the scoreboard in the third as junior Ryan Doty (Dubuque) drove in sophomore Nick Massina (Waterloo) on his single down the left field line.
Coe answered with one run in the bottom of the frame to make the score 4-1.
In the fifth, Massina hit a lead-off triple to right centerfield and then scored on wild pitch to bring the margin to two runs. Sophomore Michael Shinstock (Urbandale) drove in junior Andrew Krehbiel (Donnellson) which made the score 4-3.
The Kohawks scored one run in the bottom of the frame to move ahead 5-3.
Wartburg tallied another two run in the sixth to knot the score at five all when freshman Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) slugged a two-run single to right centerfield.
The Knights took the 6-5 lead in the seventh as sophomore Ryan Powers (Wheatland) hit a leadoff double, advanced on a groundout and then scored on a Coe throwing error.
The Orange and Black tallied three in the eighth as this time Powers hit a two-run double to right centerfield to make the score 8-5. Powers then scored on junior Levi Montague’s (Norway) single down the left field line to extend the margin to four.
Doty finished 4-5 at the plate and Krehbiel went 4-6. Massina and Montague each went 3-5.
Doty also picked up the win on the mound as he struck out four in his six innings of work. Chase Hirschauer earned his fifth save of the year.
Wartburg returns to the field Saturday when it hosts non-conference opponent, Carleton College, in a double-header at 1 p.m. at Hertel Field.
