WAVERLY, Iowa—The Wartburg College baseball team (15-13 overall) split its doubleheader against non-conference opponent, Carleton (8-15) Saturday. The two teams played two seven-inning games, which was changed due to the impending weather in the forecast.
Wartburg took the first game 4-0 but fell in the second meeting, 5-2.
The game remained scoreless until the host-Knights tallied two runs in the fourth as sophomore Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) drove in freshman Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) all the way from first base on the double down the leftfield line.
Schinstock scored as the next batter, classmate Ryan Powers (Wheatland) singled to right centerfield.
The Orange and Black scored their final two runs in the sixth as Powers picked up two more RBIs on the game with his two-run single to left centerfield.
Powers and Schinstock each went 2-3 in the game as Powers had a career-high three RBIs.
Junior Scott Benson (Reinbeck) earned his third win of the year on the mound as he pitched all seven innings and struck out six.
In the second game, the visiting Knights were the first team on the board as they scored one run in the first and added four more in the second.
The Orange and Black scored a run in the bottom of the second as sophomore Erik Rasmussen (Ankeny) scored on classmate Nick Massina’s (Waterloo) fielder’s choice.
Wartburg recorded its final run of the game in the fourth as junior Levi Montague (Norway) scored on classmate Andrew Krehbiel’s (Donnellson) sacrifice fly.
Powers again led the team at the plate as he went 3-4.
The Knights are away from competition until next Friday when they host Iowa Conference opponent, Loras, in the nine-inning game of the conference series at 6 p.m.
