INDIANOLA, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (20-16 overall, 12-8 IIAC) swept Iowa Conference opponent, Simpson (16-20, 10-11), Sunday to take the weekend series sweep.
The Knights won the first game 8-6 and the finale 7-0. Game one was delayed for a total of four hours and 32 minutes due to rain.
In the first game, the Orange and Black were ahead 5-4 with one out in the top of the fourth when the game was suspended.
The Storm evened the game in the bottom of the fourth when the game resumed.
Wartburg plated two in the fifth to regain the lead for good. Simpson tallied its final run in the fifth and the Knights scored their final run in the seventh.
Sophomore Chase Hirschauer (West Des Moines) earned the win on the hill as he struck out five in the four innings of work.
Classmate Ryan Powers (Wheatland) went 2-3 at the plate and junior Andrew Krehbiel finished 2-5. Freshman Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) tied his career-high with three RBIs.
In the final game, the Orange and Black jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first. Wartburg extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth and 6-0 with a three-run fifth inning.
The Knights scored one run in the seventh to earn the win and complete the sweep.
Sophomore Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) pitched a complete game and struck out a career-high 10 batters.
Krehbiel went 4-5 at the plate in this game.
The Orange and Black return to competition Wednesday when they host Luther in the nine-inning game of the conference series at 6 p.m.
