Wartburg Splits with Coe

WAVERLY, Iowa—In the doubleheader of the Iowa Conference series against Coe, Wartburg narrowly lost the first game, 3-2, but claimed the nightcap, 7-2.

The Knights move to 10-12 on the year and are 3-5 in conference play.

In the first game, the Kohawks jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first and scored their final run of the game in the second inning.

Freshman Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) broke up the no-hitter with his lead-off double in the fourth inning and later scored the Orange and Black’s first run on sophomore Michael Schinstock’s (Urbandale) single.

In the next frame, classmate Nick Massina (Waterloo) hit a lead-off double of his own and scored on junior Andrew Krehbiel’s (Donnellson) groundout.

Wartburg had bases loaded with one out in the sixth, but unfortunately, Coe turned a double play to quell the threat.

With two outs in the seventh, the Knights had runners on the corners, but a groundout gave the Kohawks the first game.
Wilson led the team at the plate (3-4) in the first meeting.

In the night cap, the Orange and Black jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first as sophomore Ryan Powers (Wheatland) got things started with his two-run double.

Powers then scored on sophomore Jake Raeckers’ (Waterloo) single and classmate Craig Kerper (Dyersville) slugged a two-RBI single to give Wartburg a five-run margin.

Junior Levi Montague (Norway) hit a two-run single in the next frame to extend the Knights’ lead to 7-0.

Coe tallied one run in the third and one in the fifth, but that was all so the Orange and Black took game two.

Junior Joe Moen (Rochester, Minn.) picked up his first win of the season on the mound.

Wartburg returns to the field Friday for the nine-inning game against Cornell at 6 p.m.
