WAVERLY, Iowa—Junior Ryan Doty (Dubuque) had a career-high four hits (4-5) in Wartburg’s 14-4 win over Iowa Conference opponent, Cornell Friday. He also matched his career-high on the mound with 13 strikeouts and the second time he has tied the single-game school record in this category. Doty previously recorded 13 K's against Franklin College on Feb. 27.
The game was called on account of the ten-run rule in the seventh inning.
The game was scoreless until the second inning when the Knights scored six runs on six hits.
The Rams brought the margin to two in their next at-bats as they tallied four runs to make the score 6-4.
The Orange and Black answered in a major way with seven runs in the bottom of the frame which included a two-run homer by sophomore Nick Massina (Waterloo).
The game remained 13-4 until the fifth when sophomore Chase Hirschauer (West Des Moines) drove in classmate Michael Shinstock (Urbandale) on his RBI-single to shortstop.
Cornell looked to escape the run rule in the seventh as it had runners on the corners with two outs, but a looking strikeout ended the game and gave Wartburg the win.
Both teams return to the field Saturday for the twinbill which will start at 1 p.m.
