Knights Complete Weekend Sweep of Rams

Hirschauer recorded two saves Saturday
WAVERLY, Iowa— The Wartburg baseball team (13-12 overall, 6-5 IIAC) completed the weekend series sweep against Iowa Conference opponent, Cornell (5-17, 2-5) Saturday as it took the doubleheader, 5-2 and 9-8.

In the first game, the Rams took the early 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI-single with two outs.

The Knights answered back in the second as they took the 2-0 lead. Junior Levi Montague (Norway) drove in sophomore Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) all the way from first on his double.

Sophomore Craig Kerper (Dyersville) drove in Schinstock two batters later on his double down the left field line.

The Orange and Black added three in the third as sophomore Ryan Powers (Wheatland) drove in junior Ryan Doty (Dubuque) on his single to centerfield.

Schinstock helped his own cause with his two-run home run over the left field fence to make the score 5-1.

Cornell tallied one run in the sixth to come within three but that would be the end of its scoring as Wartburg took the first game 5-2.

Sophomore Chase Hirschauer (West Des Moines) earned his third save of the year and Montague led the team at the plate (2-3).

Schinstock pitched six complete innings and fanned three in the outing

In the second game, the Rams took the early 1-0 lead in their first at-bats.

After an hour rain delay, Wartburg regained the 2-1 lead as Powers drove in junior Andrew Krehbiel (Donnellson) and Schinstock scored on a Cornell fielding error.

The Knights scored four in the second to extend their lead to 6-0.

Cornell trimmed the margin to two with three runs in the third to make the score 6-4.

The Orange and Black scored three runs of their own in the fourth, including a two-run double by sophomore Nick Massina (Waterloo).

The Rams whittled the margin to one with four runs in the sixth to make the score 9-8 but were unable to score in their last at-bats to give the series sweep to Wartburg.

Hirschauer earned another save in that game. Junior Joe Moen (Rochester, Minn.) earned his second win of the year and struck out two.

The Knights return to the field Tuesday when they travel to Cedar Rapids for the nine-inning game against Coe College in the Iowa Conference series.
