Women's Basketball Competes in California

The Wartburg women's basketball team is now 5-5 on the season after traveling to California for two games.

The Knights fell in double overtime, 87-81 Saturday to the University of LaVerne and 63-58 Sunday to California Lutheran.

Five players finished in double digits Saturday and were paced by 16 from Bobbi Burrows. Allison Emrich and Holly Halstead each tallied 14, Alyssa Sager had 12 and Carly Jacobs rounded out the leading scorers with 11 points.

Mary Brown had a team-best 11 rebounds.

The Orange and Black led 37-32 at halftime and the game was forced into overtime as the Leopards made a layup with 32 seconds remaining in regulation.

Both teams scored 11 points in the first overtime session as Burrows made a layup with 0:07 left in the session to knot the score at 72.

LaVerne led by eight points, 87-79, with 17 seconds to go in the second overtime session. Halstead made a bucket to cut the lead to six with eight seconds left, but Wartburg was unable to execute another play as time expired.

Against Cal Lutheran, Emrich led all scorers with 23 points.

The teams experienced some other obstacles as technical difficulties forced a long delay in the first half and an unconventional second half with no working scoreboards.

The Regals led 27-18 at halftime and the Knights compiled a strong second-half effort, outscoring them 40-36.

The Orange and Black are off from competition until Monday, Dec. 30 when they host Monmouth.
