WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (10-2 overall) will travel to Indianola to face Simpson (4-5) this weekend.
The two teams will play a doubleheader Friday at 3:30 p.m. and return to the field for the second doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
This marks the Iowa Conference openers for both programs as well.
A Look at the Teams:
Simpson:
The Storm played all of the same opponents as Wartburg on their Spring Break trip to Tucson, Ariz. Simpson finished 2-4 on its trip.
Blake Heitmeier leads the team at the plate (.364 batting average). Three fellow players join him in the .300s as Jake Barr is hitting .350, Bret Crable .343 and Tyler Craig is at .324.
Craig has a team-best 11 RBIs and one home run.
Gage Reis leads the pitchers with 2.79 ERA and is 1-0 in 9.2 innings pitched.
Wartburg:
Junior Ryan Powers (Wheatland) not only leads the team with a .532 batting average, but is the leading hitter in all of Division III (through games played March 17.)
Sophomore Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) is the second leading hitter (.436) and has co-leads the team with 13 RBIs.
Senior Levi Montague (Norway) also has 13 RBIs.
Senior Ryan Doty (Dubuque) leads the pitching staff with a 1.93 ERA and is 2-0 with 14 strikeouts in 14 innings of work.
