INDIANOLA, Iowa-- Wartburg took the first conference doubleheader against Simpson Friday. The Knights won 8-6 and 6-5.
The Orange and Black improved to 12-2 overall and are 2-0 in Iowa Conference play.
The Storm are 4-7, 0-2.
Both teams return for the final conference twinbill tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Since these games were orginally scheduled to be played at Wartburg, the Knights were the home team.
In the first game, Simpson plated one run in the first but the Orange and Black answered with three runs in the first and second to start with an early 6-1 lead.
The Storm came within three as they scored two in the fourth but Wartburg built its lead to five as one run scored in the fifth and sixth.
Simpson scored three in the top of the seventh on a three-run homer to make the score 8-6.
Junior Ryan Powers (Wheatland) went 3-4 to lead the team at the plate.
Senior Scott Benson (Reinbeck) went the distance and struck out four in the outing.
In the second game, the Knights scored all six runs on four hits in the second inning. This included a two-rund double from senior Andrew Krehbiel (Donnellson).
Senior Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) led the team (2-3) and junior Ben Rettenmeier (Cedar Rapids) earned his fourth win on the mound in the complete game effort. He fanned a career-high 10 batters.
