Wartburg Wins Fourth IIAC Series in Sweep Against Central

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team won its fourth Iowa Conference weekend series and moved its overall winning streak to 11 with Sunday's sweep over Central.

The Knights claimed the first game 13-0 and won the finale 5-1.

The Orange and Black are now 25-5 overall and 14-2 in IIAC games while Central falls to 15-12, 7-9.

In the first game, Wartburg plated four runs in the second and third innings to take the 8-0 lead.

Back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning by senior Drew Yoder (Wellman) and junior Clay Emrich (Plainfield, Ill.) made the score 1-0 in favor of the Knights.

The Orange and Black scored their final three runs in the sixth, including a two-run home run by senior Levi Montague (Norway).

Senior Ryan Doty (Dubuque) earned his team-best sixth win on the mound for his sixth complete game and struck out nine on the day.

Yoder finished a triple shy of the cycle as he went 3-4. Senior Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) also went 3-4.

In the second game, Wartburg plated one run in the first and second innings to take the early 2-0 lead.

Montague slugged his second roundtripper of the day in the fifth to extend the lead to 3-0.

His sacfrice fly in the seventh drove in sophomore Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) and junior Craig Kerper (Dyersville) hit an RBI double that scored Powers for the final runs.

The Dutch scored their only run of the day in the top of the ninth on a solo shot by Adam Ariola. Central threatened to score later in the inning as it had the bases loaded with two outs.

Junior Marcus Walczyk (Des Moines) recorded his tenth strikeout of the day on the next batter as he was called out on strikes.

Walczyk earned his fourth win of the season in his first complete game of the year.

Wartburg will return to the field Friday when it hosts Dubuque in a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
