WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 20 Wartburg baseball team (28-6 overall, 17-3 IIAC) took both games of the first doubleheader against Iowa Conference opponent, Dubuque (8-20, 6-14) 5-0 and 15-3 in eight innings Friday.
The first game was scoreless until the fifth inning when senior Drew Yoder (Wellman) hit a two-run single.
The Knights added three in the sixth which included a two-run double from senior Ryan Doty (Dubuque).
Classmate Andrew Krehbiel (Donnellson) led the team at the plate as he went 3-4.
Senior Scott Benson (Reinbeck) recorded his fifth win and pitched his fifth complete game of the season. He also fanned six in the outing.
The second game was scoreless until the third inning when the Orange and Black plated three runs on as many hits to take the 3-0 lead.
Wartburg scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth to extend its lead to 7-0.
In the sixth, the Spartans plated their first runs of the day as they scored three, which included a two-run shot by Spencer Kuehn.
Doty launched a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to make it an 8-1 game.
The Knights scored two runs in the seventh and five in the eighth to complete the scoring.
Senior Levi Montague's (Norway) sealed the win with his three-run home run to enforce the run rule.
Junior Ryan Powers (Wheatland) finished a perfect 4-4 at the plate and added three runs scored.
Freshman Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) went 2-2, Doty finished 3-4 and Montague was 3-5.
Junior Ben Rettenmeier (Cedar Rapids) recorded his team-best seventh win on the mound and struck out six in his 7.0 innings of work.
Both teams return for the final twinbill tomorrow at 1 p.m.
