WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 20 baseball team (29-7 overall, 18-4 IIAC) drew a split against Iowa Conference opponent, Dubuque (9-21, 7-15) Saturday. This marked the fifth straight conference series win for Wartburg.
The Knights claimed the first game 12-4 but lost 8-4 in the final game.
The Spartans jumped on the scoreboard in their first at-bats and tallied two runs.
The Orange and Black responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame and four in the second to take the 10-2 lead.
Dubuque plated its final two runs of the game in the third and Wartburg scored one in the fifth and sixth to seal the win.
Fittingly on senior day, seniors Levi Montague (Norway) and Drew Yoder (Wellman) led the team at the plate as they finished 3-4 and 3-5, respectively.
In the final game of the series, the Spartans scored three in the second to take the early lead.
The Knights got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame as sophomore Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) drove in junior Clay Emmrich (Plainfield, Ill.).
Dubuque added two in the fifth before the Orange and Black scored three in the bottom of the inning thanks to a three-run triple from junior Ryan Powers (Wheatland).
The Spartans completed their scoring with two in the eighth and one in the ninth.
Senior Andrew Krehbiel (Donnellson) went 3-4 at the plate.
Wartburg returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Decorah to face Luther in a twinbill at 1 p.m.
