#18 Wartburg Clinches Regular-Season Conference Title

DECORAH, Iowa-- The No. 18 Wartburg baseball team (31-7 overall, 20-4 IIAC) clinched the Iowa Conference regular-season title with its sweep over Luther (13-19, 9-15) Tuesday afternoon.

Wartburg has now won all six conference series to date.

The Knights won the first game 3-1 and won the finale 5-4 in 10 innings.

This marked the first regular-season crown in four years and 16th overall in program history.

"The current senior class was the only senior class that hadn't yet won a conference title in their careers but they did not allow that pressure to get to them this season," said head coach Joel Holst.

"We wanted to win the title today and not have to go to Coe on Sunday with it on the line."

This is also the ninth time in the past 16 years that the program has eclipsed the 30-win mark.

"Our two starting pitchers today, Scott Benson and Ben Rettenmeier did a great job for us on only three days rest," said Holst. "That's something we haven't done this year and they stepped up to put us in a great position."

"It took four years to finally win a conference championship but what better time than senior year," tweeted senior Ryan Doty (Dubuque).

Classmate Joe Moen (Rochester, Minn.) echoed Doty's remarks as he tweeted, "No better way to finish off an amazing four years of Wartburg baseball. Proud to be a part of this team lets keep it going."

Coach Holst continued to praise the senior class for a great season and for their efforts in clinching the title.

"Levi Montague, in my opinion, is the best defensive shortstop in our league and he continued to show that today.

"Drew Yoder has been a solid on defense for us at first base and Benson and Ryan Doty have put forth a tremendous senior effort," he continued."

The first game was scoreless until the Norse took the 1-0 lead in the third.

The Orange and Black answered with two runs in the fifth and plated their final run of the game in the sixth.

Junior Ryan Powers (Wheatland) led the team at the plate (2-3) and senior Scott Benson (Reinbeck) pitched his sixth complete game of the season.

In the finale, sophomore Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) drove in Powers on his RBI double to give Wartburg the early 1-0 lead in the first.

Luther evened the score in the second until Powers drove in senior Andrew Krehbiel (Donnellson) to regain the 2-1 lead in the third.

The Norse answered again in the bottom of the frame with two runs to regain the 3-2 lead.

Luther plated another run in the sixth to make the score 4-2 in its favor.

Krehbiel and Doty hit back-to-back RBIs singles in the seventh to knot the score at four all.

Neither team scored in the final two innings to send the game to extras.

In the top of the 10th, Wilson drove in Powers for the eventual game-winning run on his single to right field.

After the Norse's leadoff man drew a walk, the next three batters were retired in order to seal the sweep for the Knights.

The Orange and Black return to the field Sunday when they travel to Cedar Rapids to face Coe in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
