Baseball Splits First Doubleheader with Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa-- Wartburg split its Iowa Conference doubleheader against Buena Vista Friday. BV took the first game 9-1, but the Knights won the final game 8-7 in 11 innings.

In the first game, the Beavers jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Buena VIsta plated its final five runs in the third.

The Knights scored their lone run of the game in the fourth.

Senior Scott Benson pitched his second complete game of the season.

Junior Ryan Powers hit the lone extra base hit with his double in the fourth inning.

In the nightcap, BV again took the early lead with three runs in the third and two in the fourth to take the 5-0 lead.

The Orange and Black plated one in the fifth and two in the sixth on an RBI single from senior Andrew Krehbiel to make the score 5-3.

Wartburg knotted the score at five all in the eighth on another two-run single by Krehbiel.

The Beavers took the 6-5 lead in the bottom of the frame but the Knights answered in the top of the ninth to tie it once more at 6-6.

Buena Vista did not score in the bottom of the inning and neither team scored in the tenth to extend the game further.

Junior Craig Kerper drove in senior Ryan Doty and sophomore Jackson Litterer recorded the eventual game-winning RBI with his single to left field which scored Powers.

BV was able to muster one run in the bottom of the 11th but stranded the tying run on first base.

Krehbiel led the team at the plate as he finished 4-6 with four RBIs. His hits and RBIs tied a career-best.

The two teams return to the field Saturday for the final doubleheader of the series.
