MOLINE, Ill.-- The No. 21 Wartburg baseball team (34-10) fell 5-4 in 12 innings to Adrian (32-13) Wednesday afternoon.
This was the longest game of the season for the Knights and senior Scott Benson (Reinbeck) tied his career-high in innings pitched (10.0) which he last did against Simpson on 4/28/12.
The Orange and Black will now play Ripon in the elimination game Thursday at noon.
Adrian took the early 1-0 lead in the second as Mitch Stefanski scored on R.J. Rios’ ground out.
The Bulldogs added another run in the fifth as Garrett Green hit a double to the gap to score Rios.
Adrian added two in the sixth as Anthony Sergi hit a two-run single.
Wartburg got on the board in the seventh inning as senior Ryan Doty (Dubuque) drove in junior Craig Kerper (Dyersville) from second on his end of the bat to right field with two outs.
The Knights would tie the score in the eighth as sophomore Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) and senior Levi Montague (Norway) hit consecutive singles and later scored on junior Clay Emmrich’s (Plainfield, Ill.) double to the corner of right field to slice the lead to one at 4-3.
Kerper drove in pinch runner freshman Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) on his single that was just past the Bulldogs’ diving third baseman.
The game was sent to extra innings as Wartburg had the winning run on third but unable to bring home in the bottom of the ninth.
Adrian scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th as Sam Fischer hit an RBI single to right field.
The Knights were unable to score in the bottom of the frame to give the win to the Bulldogs.
Senior Andrew Krehbiel (Donnellson) went 3-6. Doty, Kerper and senior Drew Yoder (Wellman) all went 2-5.
