CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa-- The No. 18 Wartburg baseball team (31-9 overall, 19-6 IIAC) fell 9-8 and 10-7 to Iowa Conference opponent, Coe (26-12, 19-8), Sunday.
This was the first IIAC series that Wartburg did not claim this season.
In the first game, the Knights jumped on the board in their first at-bats to take a 2-0 lead.
The Kohawks answered in the bottom of the frame to tie it at 2-2.
The Orange and Black compiled four runs in the second to take the 6-2 lead which included a two-run double by sophomore Jackson Litterer (Waverly).
Coe scored one in the third on a solo home run.
Leadoff solo shots by freshman Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) and Levi Montague (Norway) in the fourth and fifth innings to extend the margin to 8-5.
The Kohawks scored four runs in the sixth to regain the lead at 9-8.
Wartburg was retired in order in its last at-bats.
Litterer went 2-2, Junior Ryan Powers (Wheatland) went 2-3 while Montague and sophomore Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) went 2-4.
In the finale, Coe jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first.
Senior Drew Yoder (Wellman) put the Knights on the board with his solo shot in the fourth.
The Kohawks extended their lead in the bottom of the frame to 9-1 with six runs.
The Orange and Black plated two in the sixth and two in the eighth, thanks to Yoder's second homer of the day to bring the score to 9-5.
Coe scored its final run in the seventh.
Wartburg compiled a rally in the top of the ninth as it scored two. The Knights had the bases loaded with two outs but the final batter grounded into a fielder's choice and the rally was stopped on the forceout.
Yoder led the team as he finished 3-5 with three runs scored and as many RBIs.
