Box ScoreVideo HighlightsDUBUQUE, Iowa-- The No. 22 Wartburg men's soccer team (12-3-5 overall) drew a 2-2 double overtime tie against No. 8 Loras (15-2-2) in the Iowa Conference Tournament Championship game, but advanced on penalty kicks (5-4).
Wartburg's penalty kick scorers were freshman Jay Tegge (Naperville, Ill.), senior Dan Nadeau (White Bear Lake, Minn.), juniors Peter Tran (Cedar Falls) and Kevin Krueger (Prior Lake, Minn.) and senior Brady Anderson (Cedar Rapids) had the title-clinching goal. The Duhawks made their first three attempts, missed the fourth one and made the fifth one to set up the crucial attempt by Anderson.
"It was incredible, all I had to do was block one and I did," said keeper Austin Boyke (Verona, Wis.). "Don't give me all the credit these guys all made their penalty kicks, we won as a team."
This is the sixth conference tournament title for the Orange and Black and first since 2009.
The Knights received the IIAC's automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament and will learn their opponent Monday during the selection show at 12:30 p.m.
Senior Tyler Salzwedel (Middleton, Wis.) gave the Knights the 1-0 lead with his goal just five seconds before halftime. "Tthere is a lot of belief on this team and it's going to take us a long ways," he commented after the game.
Loras evened the score at 77:49 but junior Zubeen Azari (Spirit Lake) answered less than two minutes later at 79:50 on an assist from Tegge.
The Duhawks tied the game once more at 85:53 to send the game into overtime.
"This game was a classic with us going up and then coming back and then it happened again," said head coach Kirk Artist. "This was the game I was most excited for in my whole career, playing and coaching because these guys are special and I think they can do big things." Artist was a four-year member of the Knights' soccer program and was a two-time First-team All-Conference selection and a member of the 2004 Elite Eight team.
Loras held the team advantage in shots at 6-1 in both extra sessions, but neither team was able to score to end the game in a tie and force penalty kicks.
