MEMPHIS, Tenn.-- The Wartburg baseball team (0-2 overall) dropped both games Saturday to host-Rhodes, 4-3 and Washington University in St. Louis, 4-2.
Against Rhodes, the Knights took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as junior Jackson Litterer (Waverly) hit a leadoff double and sophomore Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) drove him in on his double to centerfield.
The Lynx tied the score in the bottom of the second on a double steal and scored two in the third to take the 3-1 lead.
The Orange and Black plated a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by senior Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) that brought in junior Blake Wilson (Bettendorf).
Rhodes scored its final run in the sixth inning on an RBI-single.
Litterer finished 2-4 at the plate with a run scored and a stolen base. Sophomore Parker Bolt (Reinbeck) fanned five in five innings of work in his first collegiate start.
Against WashU, the Bears took the 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single. This remained the score until the seventh where WashU doubled its lead on another RBI single.
Junior DJ Utley (Cedar Rapids) knotted the game at two all with his two-run home run.
The Bears plated two runs in the top of the ninth as both runs scored on two-run single to left field to take the 4-2 lead.
Wartburg had one more at-bat and Schinstock hit a leadoff single to left field. He advanced to second on freshman Tyler Mougin's (Walford) first collegiate hit. Unfortunately, both runners would be stranded as the next batter flew out to right field to end the game.
Utley led the team at the plate (3-4) with two RBIs.
The Knights return to action next Saturday against No. 6 Webster at 11 a.m. in Sauget, Ill.
