WAVERLY, Iowa-- Wartburg took the first two games of the four-game series against Coe this afternoon. The Knights claimed the opener in shutout fashion, 4-0 and won the second game 6-4.
Senior Ben Rettenmeier (Cedar Rapids) pitched fifth complete game of the year and struck out seven to earn the win on the mound in the opener.
The Orange and Black got on the scoreboard in the second inning with two runs which included an RBI single from junior Jackson Litterer (Waverly).
Litterer recorded his second RBI single of the game in the fourth as he drove in senior Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) who later scored classmate Ryan Powers (Wheatland) on his single in the fifth to take the 4-0 lead.
Junior Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) and Schinstock went 2-3 at the plate and Litterer finished 2-4.
In the second game, Wartburg took the 1-0 lead in second as sophomore Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) scored on Schinstock's sacrifice fly. The Knights plated four in the third on an RBI single from Kemp and a two-run double by Wilson. Junior DJ Utley (Cedar Rapids) scored on a throwing error during Schinstock's at-bat to make the score 5-0.
The Kohawks scored all four of their runs in the eighth.
Senior Joe Grote (Kenyon, Minn.) scored Kemp with his sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame for the Orange and Black's final run.
Kemp led the team at the plate as he went 3-4 with three runs scored. Sophomore Parker Bolt (Reinbeck) pitched 7.2 innings to earn the win and fanned five in the outing.
The two teams return to the field tomorrow for the second twinbill which starts at 1 p.m.
