Knights Open Conference Play with Sweep of Kohawks

Emmrich slugged a three-run homer in game two against Coe Sunday.
WAVERLY, Iowa-- Wartburg opened the Iowa Conference portion of its schedule with a four-game sweep over Coe as it won both games of the doubleheader Sunday.

In the first game, sophomore Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) hit the walk-off single in the eighth to score freshman Tyler Mougin (Walford). The Knights were the first team on the board as senior Jake Raecker (Waterloo) drove in Kemp on his RBI single in the second.

Coe answered with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to tie the score at one all. Neither team scored in the duration of the game to send it to extra innings until Kemp's walk-off single.

Kemp led the team at the plate as he went 2-4 in that game. Senior Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) pitched the complete game and struck out three to earn the win.

The Kohawks struck first in the final game with a two-run homer in the top of the first. They doubled their lead in the next frame to take the 4-0 lead.

The Orange and Black got on the scoreboard in the fourth as senior Clay Emmrich (Plainfield, Ill.) scored on a Coe fielding error.

In the fifth, Kemp hit a sacrifice fly to score junior Jackson Litterer (Waverly) for Wartburg's second run. Emmrich slugged a three-run homer over the centerfield fence to give Wartburg the 5-4 lead.

Since the first game went into extra innings, the final game became a seven-inning game. Coe was retired in order in the top of the seventh to seal the win and weekend series sweep for the Knights.

Emmrich and Kemp each went 2-3 in this game. Senior Chase Hirschauer (West Des Moines) earned the win and struck out six in the outing.

The Orange and Black return to action Tuesday when they host Luther in a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
