Wartburg Splits with No. 18 Buena Vista

Rettenmeier pitched his fourth complete game of the season in Friday's win.
WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (22-12 overall, 16-6 IIAC) split the first doubleheader in the weekend series against Buena Vista Friday.

The Knights shutout out Beavers 2-0 in the first game and fell 4-1 in the night cap.

In the first game, junior Jackson Litterer (Waverly) drove in senior Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) on his RBI single to left field. Two batters later, senior Ryan Powers (Wheatland) plated classmate Joe Grote (Kenyon, Minn.) with his RBI single through the middle to give the Orange and Black the 2-0 lead.

Junior DJ Utley (Cedar Rapids) went a perfect 2-2 at the plate while senior Ben Rettemeier (Cedar Rapids) pitched fourth complete game of the season and struck out eight.

In the final game Friday, Buena Vista got on the board in its first at-bats on an RBI single to left field.

Wartburg answered in the bottom of the frame as freshman Tyler Mougin (Walford) scored to even the score.

BV plated three runs on five hits in the third to make the score 4-1.

Senior Craig Kerper (Dyersville) led the team at the plate as he went 2-3. Both teams return to the field tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Class of 2014 will be recognized between games.
