Baseball Splits Last Twinbill with Buena Vista

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (23-13 overall, 17-7 IIAC) split the second doubleheader of the weekend series against Buena Vista (29-7, 18-6) Saturday.

The Knights claimed the first game, 6-3, but fell 8-5 in the finale.

Junior DJ Utley (Cedar Rapids) gave the Orange and Black the early 1-0 lead with his solo shot in the second. BV answered with back-to-back RBI singles in third and fourth innings to take the 3-1 lead. A five-run fourth inning helped Wartburg regain the lead at 6-3. Senior Clay Emmrich (Plainfield, Ill.), junior Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) and senior Joe Grote (Kenyon, Minn.) aided in the rally with consecutive RBI singles.

Buena Vista was retired in order in the fifth and seventh innings and only had one player reach first in the sixth to seal the win for the Knights.

Senior Michael Schinstock (Urbandale) pitched his sixth complete game and struck out seven as he earned his sixth win on the hill. Wilson led the team at the plate as he went 2-3.

In the finale, BV plated a run in its first at-bat to take the early 1-0 lead. The Orange and Black used a three-run frame to gain the lead, which included a two-run single from Emmrich.

Buena Vista chipped at Wartburg's lead as it plated a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take the 4-3 lead. BV scored its final four runs in the sixth inning to take the 8-3 lead.

Emmrich drove in sophomore Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) on his groundout to make the score 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth. Emmrich started the rally in the bottom of the ninth with his one-out single. Pinch hitter senior Jake Raecker (Waterloo) reached on an error and Schinstock singled to right field to load the bases with one out. Grote brought in pinch runner junior Chaz Boots (Cedar Rapids) for the final run of the game as the next batter struck out.

Emmrich and classmate Ryan Powers (Wheatland) each went 2-4 at the plate.

The Knights return to action next Friday on the road against Central in a doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m.
