Box ScoreVideo HighlightsWAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 15 Wartburg football team moved to 2-0 on the season in its 31-14 upset win over No. 7 Bethel (0-1) Saturday.
This marked the third upset win over a Top 25 ranked opponent in program history as the previous two occurred against Coe on Oct. 21, 2006 (Wartburg won 10-7 as Coe was No. 24) and Oct. 16, 2010 (Wartbug won 31-21 as Coe was No. 6).
The Knights also extended their streak of remaining undefeated in home openers in the Walston-Hoover Stadium era, since 2001.
Junior Michael Bohlke (Manchester) put the Orange and Black on the board first with his 33-yard field goal with 3:36 left in the first.
The Royals answered on their second drive of the second quarter on a 30-yard touchdown pass to take the 7-3 lead with 9:24 left in the half.
This remained the score until junior Logan Schrader (Killdeer, Ill.) regained the lead for Wartburg on his first of two rushing touchdowns, this one an eight-yard run, with 6:49 left in the third quarter to make the score 10-7.
After Bethel went three and out, the Knights capitalized on their ensuing drive again on a Schrader run, this one from four-yards out to bring the score to 17-7.
The Royals went three and out once and the Orange and Black compiled another scoring drive capped off by a one-yard touchdown run from junior Brandon Domeyer (Manchester) to go up 24-7 with 13:49 left in the game.
Bethel compiled a ten-play, 71 yard scoring drive to pull within ten (24-14) with 9:23 remaining.
Wartburg answered one more time as it scored on a four-play, 67-yard drive that ended on a 55-yard touchdown pass by senior Taylor Jacobsmeier (Wapello) from Schrader.
Schrader finished the day 22-34 with 388 yards through the air, just 19-yards shy of his career mark. He also added 49 yards on the ground.
Jacobsmeier was the team's leading receiver as he had 160 yards on 11 catches which marked new career-bests.
Juniors Gunner Tranel (Vinton) and Andrew Janssen each had a team-best seven total tackles on the day. Tranel had a career day with six solo tackles.
The Knights conclude their two-game homestand next Saturday when they host UW-Stout at 7 p.m.
