CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (12-1 overall, 2-0 IIAC) has now won 12 games in a row with its Iowa Conference opener sweep of Coe (7-3, 0-2) Friday. The Knights won the opener 5-2 and the second game 7-1.
These two teams will return to the field for the final series doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
In the first game, the Kohawks were the first team on the board with a run in the first. The Orange and Black plated the go-ahead run in their second as sophomore Jake Thumann (DeWitt) scored on a throwing error and classmate Ty Mougin (Walford) scampered home on a wild pitch to take the 2-1 lead.
Tyler Willis scored on another wild pitch in the third to extend the lead to 3-1. Coe plated its final run in the third. Mougin scored for the second time, again on a wild pitch and junior Robbie Anstoetter (Farley) slugged a leadoff home run in the seventh for Wartburg's final run.
Junior Parker Bolt (Reinbeck) pitched his second complete game of the season and fanned three in the outing.
In the second game, the Knights struck first as Thumann drove in Willis from first on his double down the left centerfield. The Orange and Black added another run in the fourth as senior Blake Wilson (Bettendord) drove in junior Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) on his single to right centerfield.
Willis tallied his first RBI of the game in the seventh with his single down the right field line to make the score 3-0.
Wartburg compiled a four-run ninth inning as senior Jackson Litterer (Waverly) scored on Willis' sacrifice bunt, Thumann hit a two-run homer and senior DJ Utley (Cedar Rapids) had an RBI single. The Kohawks scored their lone run their ninth on a sacrifice fly.
