CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (14-1 overall, 4-0 IIAC) increased its winning streak to 14 with the sweep over Coe Saturday. This is the longest winning streak in school history since the 2013 team won 12 in a row.
The Knights won the first game 7-6 in eight innings and the series finale 8-2.
The Orange and Black jumped to the early lead as they scored three runs on as many hits. The Kohawks put two on the board in their first to whittle the margin to one. Wartburg broke out the bats in the third as senior Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) hit his first home run of the game, this one a three-run shot to take the 6-2 lead.
Coe knotted the score with four runs in the sixth. Neither team was able to score in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Wilson scored the game-winning run on his solo shot to right field and then the Knights retired the Kohawks in order in the bottom of the frame to seal the win. Wilson had five RBIs in the game, just one shy of his career best.
In the finale, the Orange and Black took the early lead again as sophomore Jake Thumann (DeWitt) hit a two-run homer to left field in the first. Wartburg added a run in the third and four in the fifth to extend its lead to 7-0.  Coe scored its lone two runs in the fifth and the Knights tallied their final run in the seventh to seal the win.
The Orange and Black returns to the field next Friday when they host Central in a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
