WAVERLY, Iowa-- The University of Dubuque claimed the first doubleheader of the weekend series, 2-0 and 9-5, Friday.
In the first game, sophomore Ty Mougin (Walford) broke up the no-hitter in the third on his single to left field. The Spartans got their first hit in the fourth and that baserunner later scored on an RBI single to take the 1-0 lead.
Dubuque plated its final run in the sixth on an RBI double.
In the night cap, Wartburg was the first team on the board as senior Jackson Litterer (Waverly) hit a leadoff double and later scored on classmate DJ Utley's (Cedar Rapids) single to left field.
The Spartans evened the score in the third and then plated four in the fourth and sixth innings to take the 9-1 lead. The Orange and Black plated three in the seventh as junior Tyler Willis (Waverly) drove in Litterer on his single up the middle, Willis scored on sophomore Jake Thumann's (DeWitt) groundout and junior Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) scored on a wild pitch, to slice UD's lead and make the score 9-4.
Wartburg compiled a rally in the ninth as senior Blake Wilson (Bettendorf) drove in Kemp on his single to right field. Mougin loaded this bases with his two-out single to centerfield, but the next batter unfortunatley struck out to give the win to the Spartans.
Mougin, junior Milton Croes (Noord, Aruba), Utley and Thumann all went 2-4 in the second game.
The two teams return to the field tomorrow for the final twinbill with the first pitch at 1 p.m.
