Knights Sweep Dubuque, Kemp Hits Walkoff in Extra Innings

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 11 Wartburg baseball team swept the second doubleheader against Dubuque Saturday. The Knights won the first game, 5-3 and took the second game 10-8 that went to 11 innings.

In the first game, the Knights took the early 3-0 lead in their first as senior DJ Utley (Cedar Rapids) drove in classmate Jackson Litterer (Waverly) on his sacrifice fly. Sophomore Jake Thumann (DeWitt) slugged a two-run homerun over the left field fence.

The Spartans put a run on the board in the second on a sacrifice fly and Utley drove in sophomore Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) on his double to left centerfield and the Orange and Black plated their final run on a fielding error.

Dubuque compiled a two-run rally in the top of the seventh but the threat was stopped as the batter lined out to first.

Kemp finsihed a perfect 2-2 at the plate in the first game.

In the weekend series finale, the Spartans took the early lead with one run in the first and two in the second. Wartburg tied it in the bottom of the second as sophomore Ty Mougin (Walford) drove in Utley and Thumann on his double to right centerfield. Senior Matt Krueger (Shoreview, Minn.) hit a sacrifice fly to score junior Milton Croes (Noord, Aruba).

Dubuque scored the go-ahead run in the third to take the 5-3 lead, and each team tallied a run in the fourth to make it 6-4.

Croes hit a two-run homerun in the sixth to even the score and Kemp hit his first roundtripper of the game in the seventh for the go-ahead run.

The Spartans took the lead once again in the eighth as the score was 8-7 but the Knights rallied again in the bottom of the frame as Thumann scored on Croes' groundout to even the score at eight all.

Neither team was able to score in the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Dubuque was retired in order in the 11th and Kemp won the game on his walkoff two-run homerun to centerfield.
