DUBUQUE, Iowa-- The No. 13 Wartburg baseball team (24-7 overall, 14-6 IIAC) split its first doubleheader of the weekend series against Loras (15-12, 9-7).
The Duhawks took the opener on a walkoff, 4-3. Loras took the early 1-0 lead with a leadoff homerun. The Knights evened the score in the bottom of the frame as junior Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) hit a sacrifice fly which scored senior Jackson Litterer (Waverly).
Junior Robbie Anstoetter (Farley) scored the go-ahead run in the fifth on LItterer's single up the middle. Litterer picked up his third hit and second RBI of the game in the seventh as he drove in junior Milton Croes (Noord, Aruba) to take the 3-1 lead.
The Duhawks compiled a rally in their last at-bats to win the opener.
In the nightcap, Loras took the 2-0 lead in the third, but the Orange and Black evened the score in the fourth. The Duhawks plated one in the bottom of the frame, but Wartburg answered again with two in the fifth, which included a sac fly from senior Blake Wilson (Bettendorf), to take the 4-3 lead.
The Knights broke out the bats in the sixth as they scored six runs on four hits, which included three doubles. Loras scored two in the seventh to cut the lead to 10-6. The Duhawks were retired in order in the ninth to give the win to Wartburg.
Sophomore Tyler Mougin (Walford) and Wilson each went 2-4 and Kemp was 2-5. Junior Parker Bolt (Reinbeck) picked up the win and fanned four in the outing.
The two teams return to the field tomorrow for the final twinbill of the series at 1 p.m.
