DUBUQUE, Iowa-- The No. 25 Wartburg baseball team (18-6 overall, 11-1 IIAC) won both games of the first doubleheader in the weekend series against Dubuque Saturday, 9-4 and 12-3. Wartburg set the single-game school record with four triples in the second game. The old mark was three which had happened three times in school history.
Junior Jake Thumann (DeWitt) recorded his first two of four RBIs in the game in the first inning on his two-run single and later scored on senior Milton Croes' (Noord, Aruba) single to give the Knights the early 3-0 lead. The Orange and Black extended their margin to 5-0 with a run in the second and third innings.
The Spartans plated two in their third but Thumann helped increase Wartburg's lead again with his two-run shot in the fourth to make it 7-2. In the seventh, sophomore Zach Hovick (Roland) and Thumann each scored on sacrifice flies to make it 9-2. Thumann reached on a double in the frame and was a triple shy of the cycle. Dubuque plated its final runs on consecutive RBI singles, but was not enough to overcome the initial margin.
Thumann went 3-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Croes and sophomore Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) went 2-3 while junior Taylor Gilson (Oelwein) went the distance for the third time this season and fanned five in the outing.
The second game had a similar start as the Knights plated four in their first at-bats, which included a two-run triple by senior Tanner Johnson (Oak Creek, Wis.). Dubuque also got on the board in the inning on an RBI ground out. Senior Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) drove in Mahoney and Thumann on his single in the third to make the score 6-1 and the Spartans answered with a sac fly in the bottom of the frame to make it 6-2.
Thumann hit a leadoff triple in the sixth and scored on Johnson's single who then scored on the next batter, Croes', double to extend the margin to 8-2. Sophomore Cody Hyler (Des Moines) drove in Croes for the third run of the inning.
The Orange and Black plated two more in the seventh on sequential hits as Hyler singled and scored on senior Tyler Willis' (Waverly) double, who scored on Mahoney's triple. Dubuque scored its final run of the day in its seventh on another sac fly.
Kemp led off the ninth with a triple and scored on the next batter, junior Mike Brown's (Bettendorf) ground out for the final run of the game.
Kemp, Johnson and Mahoney all went 3-5 as Kemp and Johnson had three RBIs.
Both teams return to the field tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the final doubleheader.
