No. 25 Knights Split Final Doubleheader with Spartans

Zach Hovick
DUBUQUE, Iowa-- The No. 25 Wartburg baseball team (19-7 overall, 12-2 IIAC) split the second doubleheader against Dubuque Sunday in the weekend series.

The Spartans won the first game, 4-3, on a bases loaded walk-off single up the middle. Senior Milton Croes (Noord, Aruba) led the Knights at the plate as he went 3-3 with a run scored. Dubuque led 3-1 after the first inning and the Orange and Black plated a run in the fourth and sixth innings to tie it at 3-3. In its last at-bats, sophomore Clay Henning (Plymouth, Wis.) was sacrificed to second for the second out, but the next batter flew out to right field to give the Spartans one more chance, which they capitalized one.

In the finale, Henning helped Wartburg take the early 1-0 lead on his RBI groundout in the first. Dubuque plated one in the fourth as the lead runner was able to score while the other baserunner was thrown out in a rundown. The Knights extended their lead in the fifth as they scored three runs on as many hits to make it 4-1 and UD plated their final run in the sixth on a leadoff triple and sacrifice fly.

Junior Jake Thumann (DeWitt) made it 5-2 on his solo home run to left field. Sophomore Zach Hovick (Roland) went 4-5, Thumann finished 3-4 and sophomore Chris Tomkins (Dubuque) earned his first save of the year.

Wartburg returns to the field Tuesday when it hosts Luther in the final half of the conference series at 3:30 p.m.
