WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 26 Wartburg baseball team (20-8 overall, 13-3 IIAC) split the final doubleheader of the conference series against Luther (20-8, 9-7) Tuesday. The Norse won the first game 2-1 in 10 innings before the Knights won the nightcap 10-4.
WARTBURG vs. LUTHER HIGHLIGHTS
Each team scored one run in the second innings as Luther used a sacrifice fly and senior Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) evened the score with his solo homerun.
Neither team was able to advance a runner past second base for the rest of the scheduled five innings, so the game went into extras. In the tenth, the Norse's leadoff hitter singled, was sacrificed to second, advanced to third on a single and scored on a fielder's choice for the eventual game-winnerr as the Orange and Black were unable to answer in their last at-bats.
In the finale, Luther jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first and Wartburg plated two in the bottom of the inning and four in the second to take the 6-3 lead.
Kemp stole home and senior Robbie Anstoetter (Farley) helped the Knights extend their margin in the fourth on his two-run homer over the left field fence to take the 9-3 lead. The Orange and Black tallied one in the fifth and the Norse scored in the sixth for the final runs.
Kemp went 3-4 in the game.
Wartburg takes to the road this weekend for the series at Central.
