INDIANOLA, Iowa-- Wartburg (9-5 overall, 2-0 IIAC) took both games of the doubleheader to open the Iowa Conference portion of its schedule Sunday.
The Knights won the first game 13-2. The Orange and Black scored two in the second on an RBI double and a wild pitch. Wartburg plated four in the fourth, thanks in part to senior Ryan Kemp's (Keokuk) first of two two-run homers in the game.
The Storm got on the scoreboard with a run in the fourth and another in the fifth. The Knights scored four more in the sixth again, thanks to Kemp's second round tripper. The Orange and Black plated their final three runs of the game in the seventh, which included two runs on junior Mike Brown's (Bettendorf) single to left field.
Sophomore Zach Hovick (Roland) was a perfect 3-3 at the plate, while classmate Clay Henning (Plymouth, Wis.) and Kemp each were 3-4. Junior Taylor Gilson (Oelwein) pitched a complete game and fanned three in the outing.
In the second game, Wartburg took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the frame, but Simpson took the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning. Each team scored one in the second and the Knights scored two in the fourth and fifth to make it 6-3. The Storm hit back-to-back doubles and a single up the middle to make it 6-5. In the seventh, Hovick hit an RBI triple to centerfield and later scored on sophomore Cody Hyler's (Des Moines) single down the right side to take the 8-5 lead.
Simpson scored one in the eighth and was retired in order in the ninth to seal the sweep for the visitors. Senior Milton Croes (Noord, Aruba) was a perfect 4-4 at the dish.
The two teams return to the field tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. for the final doubleheader of the conference series.
