Wartburg Sweeps Luther in First Half of Conference Series

DECORAH, Iowa-- Wartburg (13-5 overall, 6-0 IIAC) moved its winning streak to seven as it took both games of the doubleheader Wednesday in the first half of the conference series against Luther, 7-2 and 8-5.

In the opener, the Knights scored three in the first on as many RBI singles. The Norse also got on the scoreboard in the inning with one run and the Orange and Black added three more in the second which included a two-run single from senior Tanner Johnson (Oak Creek, Wis.). Senior Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) drove in junior Mike Brown (Bettendorf) for the final run of the game. The Norse scored their final run in the seventh on a double down the left field line. The next two batters were retired to seal the win for Wartburg.

Sophomore Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) went 2-3.

In the second game, Luther took the 1-0 lead in its first at-bats until two Knights scored in the second, which included a sacrifice fly by senior Tyler Willis (Waverly). The Norse knotted the score in the bottom of the inning. Kemp drove in the go-ahead run on his RBI triple to right field. The Orange and Black plated three more runs in the frame to make the score 6-2.

Luther had two more cross the plate on sacrifice flies to make it a 6-4 game. Wartburg scored one in the sixth and its final run in the ninth to earn the sweep.

Sophomore Clay Henning (Plymouth, Wis.) led the team at the plate as he went 2-4.

The Knights return to the field Friday against No. 18 Buena Vista at 3:30 p.m.
