No. 12/16 Wartburg Advances With 8-2 Win Over Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa-- The No. 12/16 Wartburg baseball team (32-9 overall) advanced in the winners bracket in the Iowa Conference Tournament with its 8-2 win over Coe.

Senior Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) put the Knights on the board with his single in the frist to score sophomore Clay Henning (Plymouth, Wis.). Senior Tanner Johnson (Oak Creek, Wis.) drove in junior Jacob Thumann (DeWitt) to make it 2-0.
 
The Kohawks got on the board in the fourh on an RBI groundout.

In the bottom of the frame, with the bases loaded, Johnson and junior Mike Brown (Bettendorf) scored on sophomore Blake Mahoney's (Des Moines) single to make it 4-1.
 
Coe came within one once more in the fifth on a single to centerfield which made the score 4-2.
 
In the eighth, Kemp slugged three-run homer over the fence in left centerfield to increase the lead to 7-2. Johnson scored the final run of the game as senior Milton Croes (Noord, Aruba) reached on an error.

Senior Parker Bolt (Reinbeck) pitched the complete game to earn the win. Mahoney, Henning, Thumann, Kemp, Johnson, sophomore Zach Hovick (Roland) and senior Tyler Willis (Waverly) all had two hits. Thumann increased his hitting streak to nine and has reached base safely in the last 13.

Wartburg will face Luther Friday at 1 p.m.
