Hyler's Walk-Off Single Helps No. 12/16 Wartburg Advance in IIAC Tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa-- Sophomore Cody Hyler (Des Moines) hit a walk-off single to shallow centerfield to advance No. 12/16 Wartburg (33-10 overall) past No. 17/22 Buena Vista (33-11) 10-9 in 10 innings Saturday. The Knights are now 3-1 in extra inning games on the season and this was the first extra inning game for them in the Iowa Conference Tournament since 5/12/11 when they defeated Central 6-5 in 11 innings in their first game of the tournament.

BV tied the game at seven all in the top of the ninth on a bases loaded walk and then took the 9-7 lead on a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice to give the Orange and Black one last trip to the plate.

Sophomore Clay Henning (Plymouth, Wis.) doubled to left field and moved to third on junior Jacob Thumann's (DeWitt) force out. Senior Ryan Kemp (Keokuk) drove in Henning on his double to left and senior Tanner Johnson (Oak Creek, Wis.) plated Kemp on his single up the middle to knot the game at nine all.

Buena Vista was retired in order in the tenth. In the bottom of the frame, senior Tyler Willis (Waverly) drew a walk and sophomore Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) was hit. Henning hit a sacrifice bunt down the third base side and the Beavers chose to get the lead runner. Thumann flied out to left and Kemp hustled and beat the throw to be ruled safe at first which loaded the bases with two outs. Hyler hit the game-winning single up the middle to help Wartburg advance to the conference tournament championship game.

Kemp and junior Mike Brown (Bettendorf) each went 3-5 at the plate and Brown had a career-high four RBIs.

The Knights will now face Luther at 4:30 p.m.
