Baseball Falls 10-6 to Augustana

AUBURNDALE, Fla.-- The Wartburg baseball team fell 10-6 to Augustana (Ill.) Tuesday.

The Vikings were the first team on the scoreboard with a run in the first and three in the second to take the early 4-0 lead.

Junior Eric Willis (Waverly) drove in the Knights' first run as senior Austin Lechtenberg (DeWitt) scored on his single to left field. Augustana answered with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take the 7-1 lead.

The Orange and Black compiled a three-run seventh inning as junior Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) scored on senior Mike Brown's (Bettendorf) single to left field and the next batter, freshman Tyler Nunemaker (Ely) drove in two on his single to make it 7-4.

The Vikings scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth for their final runs which made the score 10-4.

Wartburg opened its final at-bats with two consecutive singles and an RBI double from freshman Collin Guinn (Davenport) which was followed by a sacrifice fly by senior Samuel  Van Fleet (St. Paul) to make it 10-6. The rally was halted as the next two batters grounded out.

Willis led the team at the plate (4-5) while Mahoney was 3-4. Senior Taylor Gilson (Oelwein) pitched 6.0 innings and struck out four.

The Knights return to the field tomorrow against Rose Hulman.
