MINNEAPOLIS-- The Wartburg baseball team (6-6) overall split its doubleheader with St. Thomas (2-3) in the overnight hours Saturday. The Tommies claimed the opener 1-0 and the Knights won the second game 6-2.
St. Thomas had the eventual game-winning run in the sixth inning on an RBI single to left field and defensively, did not allow an Orange and Black base runner past second base.
A different story rang true in the second game as senior Austin Lechtenberg (DeWitt) drove in classmate Mike Brown (Bettendorf) on his single to center field to give Wartburg the 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Knights doubled their lead in the next frame as junior David Fitzgerald (Dubuque) scored on classmate Clay Henning's (Plymouth, Wis.) double to left.
The Tommies got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a sac fly. The Orange and Black tallied another run in the fifth as Brown drove in junior Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) and scored three runs on four hits in the sixth to make it 6-1.
St. Thomas started to rally in its last at-bats on an RBI double with one out. The next two batters were retired to end the comeback threat.
Henning and Lechtenberg each went 3-4 in the game and senior Taylor Gilson (Oelwein) had the complete game win.
Wartburg returns to the field Saturday when they host Concordia of Chicago.
