Baseball Goes 2-0 Sunday

SAUGET, Ill.-- The Wartburg baseball team (9-7 overall) moved its winning streak to three with its two wins Sunday. The Knights defeated Concordia Chicago 6-2 and No. 29 Webster 6-1.

The Knights took the early 2-0 lead in the first and plated another run in the second. The Cougars got on the scoreboard with one run in the fifth to make it 3-1.

Junior Eric Willis (Waverly) scored on classmate Blake Mahoney's (Des Moines) single up the middle and Mahoney scored on senior Jacob Thumann's (DeWitt) triple to center to take the 5-1 lead. The Orange and Black plated their final run in the eighth on an RBI groundout from senior Austin Lechtenberg (DeWitt).

The Cougars tallied their final run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the frame.

Senior Samuel Van Fleet (St. Paul) went 2-3 and junior Tanner Eckhart (Monticello, Minn.) pitched six complete innings and struck out seven to earn the win.

In the finale, the Gorloks took the early 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout. Wartburg knotted the score in the fourth as senior Mike Brown (Bettendorf) scored on junior David Fitzgerald's (Dubuque) single.

The Knights compiled a five-run seventh-inning on a bases loaded walk and grand slam from Mahoney to make it 6-1.

Willis went 2-4 at the plate and junior Austin Bohling (Letts) pitched 3.0 innings in relief to earn the win.

The Knights are off from competition until Friday when they open IIAC play at Loras.
