Hyler's Heroics Sends Wartburg Past Mount Union in Extra Innings

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.-- Junior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) hit a walk-off single to right centerfield in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Wartburg the 6-5 win over Mount Union in its final game of the annual Spring Break trip.

The Knights took the early 2-0 lead in the first as senior Jacob Thumann (DeWitt) drove in junior David Fitzgerald (Dubuque) with his single to left field and classmate Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) scored on senior Samuel Van Fleet's (St. Paul) sacrifice fly.

The Raiders plated one in the third on a sac fly of their own and used a three-run sixth inning to take the 4-2 lead. The Orange and Black answered with three runs in their half of the sixth which included a two-run double from Van Fleet to regain the 5-4 lead.

Mount Union knotted the game once more on a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Wartburg had runners on first and second with two outs, but the next batter struck out to force the game into extra innings.

The Raiders looked to score in the 10th as they had a runner on third with two outs, but the rally attempt was halted as the next guy struck out.

With one out, pinch hitter junior Clint Kannegieter (Aplington) advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on senior Tyler Mougin's (Walford) fielders choice before Hyler drove him in on his walk-off single.

The Knights are off from competition until Saturday when the face St. Thomas at US Bank Stadium for a doubleheader.
