Knights Win Tenth-Straight Against Duhawks

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (12-7 overall, 3-0 IIAC) not only increased its overall winning streak to five, but won the tenth-straight against Loras (8-11, 2-4) in the series.

The Knights won the first game in shutout fashion, 10-0 in a shortened seven innings, and claimed the finale, 10-7.

Once again, the Duhawks were the home team on the scoreboard as these games were supposed to be in Dubuque.

The Orange and Black took the early 3-0 lead in the first inning of the first game of the day, which included a two-run double from senior Mike Brown (Bettendorf).

He recorded his second of three RBIs in his next at-bat in the third as his groundout drove in junior Blake Mahoney (Des Moines). Wartburg plated another three runs in the fifth on consecutive hits. Brown had an RBI triple, senior Samuel Van Fleet's (St. Paul) double and junior David Fitzgerald's (Dubuque) single to make the score 7-0.

The final three runs occurred in the seventh as senior Jacob Thumann (DeWitt) hit a leadoff home run and junior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) scored Van Fleet and Fitzgerald for the run-rule win.

Senior Max Langheinrich (Minnetonka, Minn.) pitched the complete game and struck out six. Every Knight recorded at least one hit at the plate.

A different type of story played out in the series finale. The Orange and Black took the early 2-0 lead on a sac fly and RBI single The Duhawks scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the frame to make it 2-1.

This remained the score until the fourth when senior Austin Lechtenberg (DeWitt) had a two-run single to take the 4-1 lead. Mahoney hit a two-run homer in the fifth which made the score 6-1. Loras scored one in the bottom of the inning and then four in the sixth to tie it at six all.

Each team plated one in the seventh, which included another solo shot by Thumann.

Wartburg scored the go-ahead run in the eighth as Lechtenberg scored on Henning's single and Mahoney drove in junior Eric Willis (Waverly) to take the 9-7 lead. The Knights scored their final run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly and the Duhawks were unable to compile a rally to seal the three-game sweep.

Thumann and Fitzgerald went 3-4 and Henning finished 3-5.

The Orange and Black return to the field Tuesday when they host Simpson in a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
