Knights Complete Season Sweep of Storm

INDIANOLA, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (16-9 overall, 7-2 IIAC) completed the season sweep over Simpson (5-19, 2-10) as it claimed the nine-inning game of the conference series, 17-1 in seven innings.

The Knights took the early 4-0 lead in the third which included a two-run single from senior Jacob Thumann (DeWitt). The Orange and Black plated two more in the next frame on junior Blake Mahoney's (Des Moines) single to left.

In the sixth, Mahoney sacrificed classmate Eric Willis (Waverly) to give Wartburg the 7-0 lead.

The Knights went on to score 10 runs in the seventh which included two-run singles from junior Zach Hovick (Roland) and senior Austin Lechtenberg (DeWitt) and a three-run home run from junior Cody Hyler (Des Moines). The 10 runs were five shy of the single-inning record of 15 set against Johnson & Wales on March 8, 2003 in Florida.

Brown was 3-5 with three runs scored and Hyler finished 2-3 with three runs scored and as many RBIs.

The Orange and Black return home to host Nebraska Wesleyan in a conference series this weekend. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
