Baseball Sweeps Prairie Wolves, Thumann Ties Record

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (18-9 overall, 9-2 IIAC) claimed both games of the doubleheader against Nebraska Wesleyan (11-19, 4-10) Saturday, 5-4 in 10 innings and 9-2.

With his two home runs in the first game, senior Jacob Thumann (DeWitt) has tied the career leader mark in that category with 28, set by Wartburg Athletics Hall of Fame member, Matt Thede in 2001.

Thumann and junior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) went back-to-back in the sixth inning to make the score 3-2 in the Knights' favor. The Prairie Wolves tied it in the top of the ninth on a solo shot and took the 4-3 lead in the tenth on a fielding error.

Thumann knotted the score on his solo homer to center field. Hyler singled, was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Senior Mike Brown (Bettendorf) and junior David Fitzgerald (Dubuque) drew consecutive walks to load the bases with one out. Junior Zach Hovick (Roland) hit a walkoff single to left field to score Hyler for the winning run.

Junior Blake Mahoney (Des Moines), Thumann and Hyler all finished 2-5. Senior Taylor Gilson (Oelwein) pitched nine complete innings and struck out 10.

In the second game, Nebraska Wesleyan led 1-0 after its first at-bats. The Orange and Black roared back in the bottom of the frame with six runs on seven hits to take the 6-1 lead.

Wartburg extended its lead to 7-1 in the third on Fitzgerald's second RBI double of the game. The Prairie Wolves plated their final run of the day in the fourth on a groundout.

The Knights tallied their final two runs in the fifth as Brown scored on a wild pitch and Fitzgerald drove in Hovick.

Fitzgerald was 3-3 with five RBIs and Brown was 2-3 with three runs scored in the finale.

The teams will complete the series Monday in the single nine-inning game at 2 p.m.
