WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (21-10 overall, 12-3 IIAC) swept the doubleheader against Buena Vista (18-12, 9-6) 6-2 and 7-3 Saturday.
The first game was scoreless until the sixth inning when BV hit a leadoff homerun to take the 1-0 lead. The Knights answered back with five runs on three hits which included a two-run single from junior Zach Hovick (Roland).
The Beavers plated their final run of the contest in the seventh on an RBI single and Hovick drove in senior Jacob Thumann (DeWitt) on his RBI groundout fo the final run for the Orange and Black in the eighth.
Hovick went 3-4 with three RBIs and senior Max Langheinrich (Minnetonka, Minn.) pitched seven complete innings and struck out six to earn the win.
In the finale, BV took the early lead with a run in the first and second. Wartburg tied it in the fourth on RBI singles from seniors Mike Brown (Bettendorf) and Austin Lechtenberg (DeWitt).
The Beavers had the go-ahead run in their next at-bats, but the Knights knotted it once more in the bottom of the frame as junior Eric Willis (Waverly) scored on classmate David Fitzgerald's (Dubuque) groundout.
The Orange and Black reclaimed the lead for good in the eighth with four runs on five hits which included consecutive RBI singles from junior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) and Willis and then by junior Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) and Thumann.
Willis finished 3-5 and Brown went 2-3.
Wartburg travels to face Coe Tuesday in the doubleheader part of the conference series.
